Fremont then outscored the Lions 10-6 in the second quarter for a 20-16 halftime lead. The third quarter saw the Packers begin to pull away with a 15-6 advantage, led by Jessica Bennett's 8 points in the quarter. Newaygo was led by Barbara Toth's 8 and Grace Painter's 6. Fremont improves to 9-14 on the season. Newaygo finishes the season at 6-16.  Coach Zerlaut -- "We expected Newaygo to be ready to play. They jumped out early on us, but we were able to play through some opening quarter nerves and gain our footing a little. The third quarter was big for us to gain some momentum and confidence as we opened up the lead a bit. However, Newaygo didn't go away and battled until the end."

Lose: 45 - 58
The Packers wrapped up the regular season with a trip to Manistee on Friday night. The Chippewas came out on top by a final score of 58-45. Fremont struggled in the first half on offense, while Manistee hit four 3-pointers and had multiple fast break baskets that led to a 12-5 advantage after one quarter and a 26-13 lead at halftime. The Packers came out to start the second half by quickly trimming the lead to 8 at 30-22, but Manistee went on a 10-0 run to build a 40-22 lead. Fremont went on a 7-2 run to end the third quarter, but still trailed 42-29 heading into the fourth quarter. They again started strong, trimming the Chippewa lead to 7. However, Manistee held on down the stretch, and made 11 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.  Fremont was led by Olivia Hansen's 15 points and Jessica Bennett had 13. Manistee' s Jayna Edmondson had a game-high 20 points and Mariah Bialik had 15. The Packers finish the regular season with an overall record of 8-14 and a 5-7 record in the WMC Lakes Division. Manistee finished with an overall record of 10-12 and also a 5-7 record in the conference. The two teams tied for fourth in conference play.  Coach Zerlaut -- "Credit Manistee for coming out so strong to start the game. We struggled and fell behind early. We played a much better second half. We were more aggressive on both ends of the floor and executed much better on offense. We had a couple really good runs to close the gap, but just couldn't get all the way back and they did a good job of making free throws late in the game."

Win: 30 - 21
Fremont traveled to Whitehall Thursday evening and came home with a hard fought 30-21 victory. The scoring was very slow for the first three quarters. Fremont trailed 3-2 after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime. Both of the Packer baskets were by Olivia Hansen. The Packers then outscored the hosts 8-4 in the third quarter to tie the game at 12-12. Scoring then picked up in the fourth with Fremont holding an 18-9 advantage, led by Lily VandenBerg with 6 of her game-high 8 points in that quarter. She also had 7 rebounds for the game. Mia Clemence had 7 points, and Jessica Bennett added 6 points. Hansen tallied 11 rebounds to go along with her 4 points. The win was the third in a row for the Packers and improved their overall record to 8-13, 5-6 in the WMC Lakes Division. The loss dropped Whitehall to 10-10 overall, 3-8 in the WMC Lakes,  Coach Zerlaut -- "Our defense and rebounding in the first half kept us in the game. We got 19 shots and had 9 offensive rebounds, but we just couldn't put it in the basket. I was pleased with our girls' perseverance to keep battling on each possession, despite that frustration. It wasn't pretty tonight, but we found a way to win."

Win: 43 - 15
The Fremont Packers hosted Orchard View for the final home game of the season and came away with a 43-15 victory. The teams exchanged baskets early on in a very competitive first quarter. Fremont made a couple late free throws in the quarter to lead 12-7 after one. Fremont took control in the second quarter with an 18-3 advantage to lead 30-10 at the half. The scoring in the second half slowed down, with Fremont holding a 4-0 advantage in the third quarter and a 9-5 advantage in the fourth.  Fremont had a very balanced scoring attack. Jessica Bennett had 11, Sydney Moon 7, and Katie Ackerman and Lily VandenBerg each had 5. Ten different Packer players scored in the game. The win improves the Packers record to 7-13 overall, 4-6 in the WMC Lakes Division. Orchard View fell to 1-18 overall, 0-10 in the conference.  Coach Zerlaut -- "We talked with the girls about making a memory tonight and they did just that. It was the last home game of the season, the last home game for our Seniors, we had the school Mid-Winter festivities, we recognized our youth programs, and it was our Coaches vs. Cancer event. The girls had special jerseys to wear with the name of a loved one they were playing in honor or in memory of. Thank you to Brooke Tanner and the Tanner Farm Bureau Insurance Agency for sponsoring the event. It was a great night for our basketball program and for our kids."

Lose: 52 - 62
Fremont traveled to Grant Tuesday night to play the Tigers. Fremont jumped out to an early lead but Grant battled back to tie the game at 13 by the close of the first period. Fremont held a 15-11 advantage in the second quarter to take a 28-24 lead into the halftime locker room. The game continued to be close until the final couple minutes of the third quarter when the Grant press finally wore down the Packers and forced some turnovers during a 7-0 run to end the third quarter and the Tigers took a 46-39 lead into the fourth. The fourth quarter started the same the third ended, with a quick run by Grant to extend the lead to 51-39. However, the Packers didn't quit, and closed the gap to 8 points inside two minutes, but could get no closer.  Grant was led by Julie Ashbaugh's 25 points, including going 13-14 from the free throw line. Jaycee Hance and Josie Pleune each added 13 points. Fremont was led by Jessica Bennett's 20 points and Olivia Hansen added 16.  Coach Zerlaut -- "Our effort and energy were outstanding again tonight. We got off to a quick start offensively and that seemed to build some confidence, which led to more shots falling tonight. We did a really good job of getting the ball inside tonight and we rebounded well throughout the game. Take away the run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth and we were right there."
Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Muskegon Catholic Central

Win: 30 - 28
Fremont hosted Muskegon Catholic Central on Friday night and came away with a 30-28 come from behind win. The Crusaders held an 11-6 lead after one quarter, and a 21-10 lead at halftime, behind the sharp shooting of Carrie Ladd and Claire LeVigne. They combined for 19 of the team's 21 points, including five made three-pointers in the half. The Packers, however, clamped down in the second half on defense with Julianne Hernandez, Riley Chase, Mia Clemence, and Katie Ackerman taking turns to hold the duo from MCC to just one field goal and one free throw in the second half. Fremont closed the gap to 24-20 at the end of the third but never were able to tie the game until the final minute and a half at 28-28. After getting a defensive stop, Fremont held the ball to chew some clock before Jessica Bennett found Lily VandenBerg for a 15 foot jumper from the baseline that found nothing but the bottom of the net to put the Packers up 30-28. MCC pushed the ball up the floor quickly and had a good look at a long three that drew rim, but bounced out and the Packers prevailed 30-28. Ladd finished with 12 and LaVigne had 10 for the Crusaders. The Packers were led by Jessica Bennett's 13 points and 5 rebounds. Olivia Hansen and Lily VandenBerg each chipped in 6 points.  Coach Zerlaut -- "I am just really happy for our kids tonight. They have continued to work hard despite some frustrating close losses. We really struggled to score in the first half tonight, despite executing well on offense. They could have given up when we were down 11 at the half, but instead they committed to work hard on the defensive end and we found a way to score just enough points in the end. I'm really proud of their perseverance tonight."
Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Ludington Area Schools

Lose: 23 - 53
Fremont hosted the Ludington Orioles on Tuesday night to begin the second half of the league season. The Orioles prevailed 50-20. Ludington led 10-3 after one quarter and 28-14 at halftime. Keelyn Laird had 14 for Ludington, while Elianna Jeruzal had 10. Emma McKinley and Olivia Lynn each chipped in 8. Coach Zerlaut -- "The girls gave really good effort tonight. Ludington's size wore us down throughout the game and things got away from us on the scoreboard. I didn't feel like the final score reflected how well we battled tonight."
Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Ravenna High School

Lose: 26 - 32
Fremont lost to Ravenna last night in a low scoring game. Both teams struggled to score throughout the game. The score was tied at 5 after the first quarter. Ravenna led 16-13 at the half, 25-20 after three quarters, and won by a final score of 32-26. Ravenna spent part of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter in a 4-corners offense that took a lot of time off the clock and kept the ball out of Fremont's hands.  Fremont was led by Jessica Bennett with 10 points and Khaila Noordyk with 8. Ravenna was led by Postema's 9 points and Emma Gillard's 8. Coach Zerlaut -- "We got a lot of good shots tonight, they just didn't fall. Credit Ravenna with going to the four corners and taking a lot of time off the clock. Our girls worked hard on defense against that, and got some steals, but they didn't turn into points often enough and they were able to whittle the clock away."

Lose: 30 - 42
Fremont hosted the Spartans of Mason County Central on Monday night. The Spartans won 42-30. MCC held a 16-4 advantage after the first quarter, 25-16 at the half, and 34-21 after three quarters. Fremont trimmed the lead to 7 points during the second quarter, but were not able to get any closer the rest of the game. Fremont finished the game 7-46 (15%) from the field. MCC shot 16-63 (25%).  Fremont was led by Jessica Bennett's 13 points and 7 rebounds. Olivia Hansen added 7 rebounds. MCC was led by Mallory Miller's 9 points, while Grace Weinert added 8. The Packers fell to 4-9 overall, 2-4 in the WMC Lakes. MCC improved to 9-1 overall, 6-1 in the WMC Rivers. Coach Zerlaut -- "We had some early turnovers that turned into points for MCC that put us in a hole, but otherwise I was pleased with our effort tonight, especially on the defensive end of the floor. They are a good basketball team that has been winning a lot of games, and by big margins. We competed well, but we struggled to put the ball in the basket which ultimately prevented us from getting back in the game."

The Packers began January with a win at home over the Vikings from Tri County 46-19. The Packers played solid defense throughout the first quarter and led 10-4 at the end of the quarter. Lose: 35 - 49
Fremont hosted Sparta on Wednesday evening. The Spartans jumped out to an early 11-2 lead after the first quarter, which proved to be the real difference in the game. Sparta held a 28-11 lead at halftime, 39-20 after three quarters, and then a 15-10 advantage for Fremont in the fourth quarter set the 49-35 final score. Lose: 33 - 36
The Packers traveled to Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills Friday night and returned home with a disappointing 36-33 loss. The Packers led for most of the game but were not able to close out the win in the end. Fremont led 7-6 after one quarter, 17-10 at halftime, and 26-22 at the end of the third. Their largest lead came at 24-12 in the third quarter, however turnovers and back to back made three pointers by the Bengals changed the momentum. Ottawa Hills took their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter and held on down the stretch for the win.   Fremont was led offensively by Lily VandenBerg with 11 points, Khaila Noordyk with 9, and Mia Clemence with 8. The loss drops the Packers to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the WMC Lakes division. Ottawa Hills improved to 2-1 overall.   Coach Zerlaut — “It was a very disappointing loss. We struggled to convert around the basket for much of the night and only made 8 of 23 free throw attempts. It was an extremely physical game, and we did not handle it as well as I hoped that we would. As much as we struggled in the physical aspects of the game, it was our mental miscues that proved to be the biggest difference between pulling out a win tonight and suffering a tough loss.”

Win: 58 - 30
Fremont traveled to Shelby for a WMC crossover game and came home with their first win of the young season 58-30 over the Tigers. The Packers led 14-6 after the first quarter and then exploded for 21 points in the second quarter to take a 35-13 lead into halftime. They extended that lead with a 16-10 advantage in the third quarter before both teams scored 7 points in the last period to set the final score.  Jessica Bennett led a balanced Packers scoring attack with 12 points. Mia Clemence had 9, Khaila Noordyk 8, and Lily VandenBerg 7. Thirteen different Packers players scored on the night. The win improves the Packers to 1-2, 0-1 in the WMC Lakes division. The Tigers fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the WMC Rivers division.  Coach Zerlaut -- "We got really good effort again tonight. The difference was that the ball went in the basket more consistently tonight. We got some good results from our pressure defense in the second quarter to open up the score a bit and the girls got into the flow of the game. We got great contributions from a lot of different sources. It was truly a team effort tonight."

Lose: 16 - 47
The Packers traveled to Ludington on Friday night to open league play against the Orioles. Despite a solid effort defensively against a formidable opponent, Fremont couldn't keep the game close due to a lack of offensive production. The Packers were down 15-1 at the end of the first quarter, before outscoring the hosts 8-6 in the second quarter to set the halftime score at 21-9. The Orioles stretched the lead further in the third with a 12-5 advantage, before a 14-2 final quarter set the final score at 47-16.  The Packers were led in scoring by Jessica Bennett with 7 points. Ludington's balanced scoring attack was led by Olivia Lynn's 9 points.  The Packers dropped to 0-2 on the young season, 0-1 in the WMC Lakes division. Ludington improved to 1-1, 1-0 in the conference. Fremont travels to Shelby Tuesday in a WMC crossover matchup. Coach Zerlaut -- "You aren't going to win games when you go 4-37 from the field shooting. Our effort was strong. Our defensive execution was actually very good. Ludington is a talented team that made contested shots, scored over us, and played excellent defense to speed the game up and make us very uncomfortable when shooting the ball. We need to get better offensively in order to better compete against really good teams."

Lose: 34 - 47
The Fremont Packers Girls Basketball team opened the season at home with a 47-34 loss to the Spring Lake Lakers. Turnovers plagued the Packers throughout the game. The Lakers led 13-9 after one quarter and 21-13 at half. The Packers held a 13-8 scoring advantage in the third quarter to make the score 29-26, but quickly fell behind by double digits early in the fourth quarter and could get it no closer than 8 points the rest of the way. The Lakers held an 18-8 advantage in the fourth quarter. Jessica Bennett led the Packers with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Lily VandenBerg and Khaila Noordyk each added 6 points. Spring Lake was led by Brooke Bolthouse and Ella Andree with 13 points each, while Tessa Britt chipped in 8. Coach Zerlaut -- "It was a frustrating outcome because our girls played very hard tonight. However, we played very sloppy with the ball. We played much of the game in 'panic mode', which resulted in a lot of turnovers. Credit Spring Lake for good pressure defense that we did not handle well tonight. There were positives that we can build on and this team will get better, but it was not the result we expected."
