2019 XC State Finals – Michigan International Speedway Brooklyn MI
Cold and Breezy – Some mud and standing water.
Girls race
Taylor Mater (So) was representing the “Pack” as our sole qualifier in the girls race. Tayor missed all of last season with injury and the middle 1/3 of this season. Because of this she had not yet raced in a field as large and competitive as the state finals. (MSU, Portage) Despite lacking big meet experience she went out and raced like a champ. She had a decent start, running just outside the top 30 at the mile mark. The top 30 finishers are all-state. In the 2nd mile Taylor moved up through the crowd into 23rd by the 2 mile. She was showing signs of stress as she headed back to the infield for the last ¾ of a mile. From a distance I could see Taylor struggling as she faded to about 26th with 800 to go. Getting a little close to losing that all-state spot. But she never gave up, kept fighting and was able to recover with a strong finish over the last 400 to move up to 22nd at the finish to earn her all-state award. Taylor is our first girls all-stater since 2011. She did a great job of cross-training and believing she would recover during the time that she missed in the middle of the season.
Boys race
The boys came in to the race heavily favored and they delivered. This is still a young group and they handled the pressure well. They do a good job staying pretty loose until it is time to perform. The boys seized control of the race by the ¾ mile mark and never let go, finishing with 68 points to 2nd places 176. Nathan Walker (Jr), one of the individual favorites led the way going right to the lead pack. Conor Somers (So) was a the front of a small chase pack at the mile. At the mile Josh Zerfas (Jr), Ben Paige (Jr), and Adam Ward (Jr) were grouped up at the front of the main field. Mikko Vesma (Sr) and Colton Best (Jr) were well back in the field at the mile mark. In the second mile Nathan took the lead and pushed the pace to thin out the lead group of 5 while Conor and another athlete broke free of the chase pack. Josh, Ben were holding position while Adam was starting to move. Mikko started to improve his position a little over the 2nd mile while Colton was holding steady. Over the last mile the lead pack splintered as Evan Bishop of East Grand Rapids set a fantastic tempo. Nathan held on to 3rd until the last 50 meters where he was nipped at the line to finish 4th. Conor continued his one on one battle for 6th and 7th, until they were caught from behind with about 1000 to go making it a 3 way battle. He couldn’t quite hand on and finised a solid 8th. The last mile saw Adam continue to run strong and moving up and fighting off some strong finishers to finish 18th. Ben faded the first 400 of the last mile, recovered started moving back up, lost a shoe with about 800 to go, and took off to have a great last 300 to finish 20th. Josh had a rough time the last mile, but fought all the way to finish 43rd. Mikko had a screaming last mile impriving 30-40 places to finish 36th, missing all state honors by 6 places. Colton had a tough last mile also fighting home in 100th.
This was Fremont’s 9th boys State Championship.
Their finish also clinched Fremont’s claim to “Team of the Decade” for Division 2 based on finish places at the state finals from 2010-2019.

2019 Regionals – Benzie Central
Cool, light breeze, good footing on course.
Lots of PRs today
The girls started things off with a solid run placing 6th, with 149 points. Taylor Mater (So) got out at the tail end of the lead pack, while Leah Converse (Jr) was out in the top 1/3rd. The rest of the girls were in the middle of the field. As the race progressed Taylor slowly picked through the leaders moving up into 4th. Leah was fighting hard to hold her position after going out a little to fast, while Erin Norton (Jr), Morgan Best (Fr), Taava Johnson (So), Lauren Boerger (Sr), and Annika Tuls (Sr) were moving up. At about the half way point of the race Annika flipped a switch and really started moving aggressively. She probably moved from about 60th to 33rd by the end of the race. We ran solid over the 3rd mile with Taylor closing on 3rd but not quite getting there and the rest of the girls grouping up in the 30s and 40s.
4th Taylor Mater PR – All-Region, State Qualifier Indv.
33rd Annika Tuls PR
35th Leah Converse SR
37th Erin Norton PR
40th Morgon Best PR
47th Taava Johnson
49th Lauren Boerger PR
The boys continued to look strong winning the meet with 18 points and qualifying for the State Finals as a team.. Our top 5 separated quickly with Petoskey’s #1 runner in the mix. Nathan Walker (Jr) spent the meet chasing the lead cart to a winning time of 14:52.8, missing Dathan Ritzenhien’s course record by about 3 seconds. Conor Somers (So) ran solo in 2nd for most of the race. Josh Zerfas (Jr), Ben Paige (Jr) and Adam Ward (Jr) ran pretty close together chasing Petoskey in 4th, 5th, and 6th. They raced well over the last 1000 with Ben almost catching Petoskey to place 4th, and Adam and Josh battling over the last 200 to place 5th and 6th. Mikko Vesma (Sr) had his fastest start of the season and was in 15th at the mile. He worked his way up to 11th at the 2 mile and had a great finish to place 7th. Colton Best (Jr) had a little more conservative start, but moved up steadily through the first 2 miles, then ran a great 3rd mile to place 11th.

CSAA Jamboree #3
Cool conditions
This was our last Conference Jamboree. The girls needed to win the race and have Reed City place 3rd to be able to share the Conference Championship with RC. The girls stepped up to pull off the victory, scoring 55 points, with many having their best conference finishes of the season. We were really proud of the girls to produce a win at our final conference meet. Reed City finished 2nd to take the Conf. Championship outright.
The boys won the meet with another perfect score of 15 points to win the conference championship. Nathan Walker (Jr) set an new course record of 15:18.5 breaking Ben Schmidt’s record of 15:47.8. The boys also took 6 of the 7 1st Team All-Conference slots.

Another day of nice weather for running. This was the first time a race was held on this course. This was a true cross country course with a very hilly 1st mile and lots of turns in wooded trails.
Results have not been posted yet so I do not have team scores or times, so I do my best from memory.
The girls got out to a better start than our last couple of meets. They also did a good job moving up through the race. I felt that this was a much better race for the girls than our 1st conference meet though the scores won’t show it as we were missing one of our top runners. Leah Converse (Jr) placed 8th, while Lauren Boerger (Sr) had a breakout race to finish as out 4th runner. I saw a lot of focused running by the girls. We wanted to get out faster and they executed and then moved up.
The boys had a good day also claiming the top 6 finishers to win the meet. 1-Nathan Walker (Jr), 2-Conor Somers (So), 3-Josh Zerfas (Jr), 4-Adam Ward (Jr), 5-Mikko Vesma (Sr), 6-Colton Best (Jr), and Gavin Schuler (So) placing a clos 8th. The boys ran with the leader through the 2 mile mark and then worked to pull away over the last mile. Seven LaRoue (Sr) and Sam Parks (Sr) turned in solid performances and may have made the top 14.
Our next meet is next Tuesday at Chippewa Hills.

Win: 754.00 - 0
2019 Portage Invitational - Great weather, great footing.
The girls had a solid race finishing 29th of 44 teams with 754 points. We got out a little slow which can be a problem in a race this big, as the course gets really crowded and it is hard to pass. The girls worked hard to move up and did improve their positions throughout the race. Morgon Best (So) moved up well in the middle part of the race, faltered slightly but then recovered and finished strong to lead the team in with a Pr of 21:16. Leah Converse (Jr) ran a steady race to record her best time of the season - 21:27. Taava Johnson had a great finish stretch run to run her Pr for 21:35. Erin Norton (Jr) continues her strong season with a SR 21:45. Annika Tuls (Sr) and Alyssa Gustman (Sr) also ran SR's at 22:11 and 24:59. Lauren Boerger (Sr) continues with steady improvement running a PR 22:53. We didn't have quite the team finish that we wanted, but I was proud of how the girls worked to move up through the crowd and their strong finishes.

Girls
What a race. We knew going in that this was going to be a battle with Chippewa Hills. The girls were focused on where they needed to finish compared to Chips top 5 to beat them. We got out a little slow but made up a lot of ground over the last mile to put us in contention. We didn’t quite get to where we wanted to be, but we were in the mix. Taylor Mater (So) ran with the leaders through 2 miles where she started to apply a little pressure and open a slight gap. With about a 1000 to go she really started to pull away to win by about 15 seconds to help our team cause. Leah Converse (Jr) closed the gap to Chips #3 the whole race but didn’t quite get there, while Erin Norton (Jr) ran her best race of the season to finish shortly behind Leah. Taava Johnson (So) and Annika Tuls (Sr) ran solid races to round out our top 5. Lauren Boerger (Sr) came in as our 6th with a PR while Alyssa Gustman (Sr) ran a season record as our 7th runner. In the team race Reed City ran a great race to sneak in on both us and Chip Hills to win. They had some big improvements to surprise us. The team race was about as close as it can get – Chip Hills 3rd with 61 points, Fremont 2nd with 59 points, and Reed City 1st with 58 points.
Boys
The boys won in dominate fashion scoring 16 points and placing 7 the top 9 finishers. Nathan Walker (Jr) led the way, followed by Conor Somers (So), Josh Zerfas (Jr), and Ben Paige (Jr) to place 1-4. Mikko Vesma (Sr), Adam Ward (Jr), and Gavin Schuler (So) placed 6-8th. Colton Best (Jr) ran his best race of the season to place 11th. Colton Isenhart (Jr) ran a great race to set a huge PR to place 53rd, with Peem Torjaras (Sr) also setting a PR.

It was a great morning for running! We had two great races in Ludington today. The girls finished 3rd with Taylor Mater taking the lead from 300 mark and never looking back, Taylor won the race finishing over a minute ahead of the 2nd place finisher with a time of 20:04. Morgan Best finished 8th at 23:26 followed by Annika Tuls and Lauren Boerger.
The Boys won the race with 21 points. Adam Ward and Mikko Vesma ran smart from the beginning and took control of the race at the mile mark. Adam was 1st with a time of 17:54 and Mikko was 2nd with 18:07. Colton Best was 5th 18:44, Seven LaRoue 6th 19:05, Gavin Schuler 7th 19:07, Brennan Schuler 8th 19:14. We dodged the storms. Forgot my laptop so typing from my iPad, will be short. Course ran slower than last year. Wanted both teams to focus on moving up the second half of the race. Girls got out a little slow but moved up well. Boys ran well through 2-2.5 miles then faded a little. Finished 5th. Only 1 team in our division (Otsego) beat us. Was hot and humid. Solid efforts and a good learning experience. The rest of the team runs tomorrow at the Ludington invite. Results can be found at https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/156952/results

A great day for racing.
I would like to start by thanking all the volunteers who gave their time to help make the event a success. Thank you to the Maintenance staff for making the course look great.
Girls Varsity
- After losing a large portion of the team to graduation last year we had some questions as to where we would stack up. In our first race of the year girls answers some of those questions. They ran great to win the meet on a tie-breaker (best 6th runner) with Whitehall. The started at an intelligent pace. They then moved up throughout the race. Taylor Mater (So) did a great job hunting down the leaders in the 2nd mile and then running away from them to win. Leah Convers (Jr) also moved up well to be our 2nd finisher. We saw nice pack running from Morgan Best (Fr), Taava Johnson (So), and Erin Norton (Jr) as they moved up through the field as a group. Annika Tuls (Sr) chased that group and finished strong to give us 6 runners in the top 15, and to seal our win as she beat Whitehall’s 6th runner by 12 places. Alyssa Gustman (Sr) had a solid showing as our 7th runner, running over a minute faster than she did last year.
Boys Varsity
The boys had a dominate showing placing 4 in the top 5, 6 in the top 10 , and all 7 in the top 15. Nathan Walker (Jr) lead the way from start to finish in a course record 16:19. Conor Somers (So), Josh Zerfas (Jr), and Ben Paige (Jr) worked well together for the first half of the race. Adam Ward (Jr) battled hard to give us a sweep of the top 5 places but faded just a little over the last 800 to come in 6th. Gavin Orcutt (Sr) started his senior year off with a bang running over a minute faster than he did last year. Seven LaRoue (Sr) moved up well to round out the placing for us finishing 12th. This was a good start for the boy as they were eager for a race after a summer of training.
Girls JV
We had 3 athletes in the girls race, all pretty new to XC running. 1st time runner Lauren Boerger (Sr) led the way for the Pack, battling with 2 Whitehall runners for the win. Lauren couldn’t quite hang on over the last mile, but showed promise with her willingness to mix it up with the leaders. Her finish time was fast enough to move her into our top 7. Mia Witte (So) and Mackenzie Boyd (Fr) had good 1st races to get experience under their belts. Mackenzie had some great surges in the race to move up through several gaps to catch and pass people.
Boys JV
The boys made the sweep that varsity just missed placing 1-5. Mikko Vesma (Sr) ran a smart 1st mile moving to the lead in the second mile and never looked back to earn the win. His finishing time was fast enough to place him in our top 7. Gavin Schuler (So), Sam Parks (Sr), Nathan Johnson (Jr), and Jackson Fair (Jr) rounded out the top 5. Jackson put in a lot of work over the last 800 to chase down an athlete from Montague to finish 5th. Peem Torjaras (Sr) was our 6th finisher with Bryce Cosens (Sr) just missing a lifetime PR to round out our top 7.
