Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Spring Lake High School

Lose: -
Fremont varsity boys lost 56-42 to Spring Lake on Tuesday night bringing an end to our season. We came out very flat in the first quarter on both ends. I thought our defense and rebounding picked up after that but we could not get any shots to fall in the first half scoring only nine points. For the first time in a while our ball movement was not good. There was too much dribbling and one on one basketball which never works against good teams like that. When we did get open shots or free throws, we did not convert on those opportunities. We trailed by twenty three points entering the fourth quarter, but to our kids credit we did not give up, and fought back to cut the lead to ten at one point. It's always disappointing when the season ends but this group has a lot to be proud of. This post season run has been a lot of fun, and I'm proud of the kids for all they accomplished. Will DeBlake led Fremont with 14 points. Chaz Miller added 13, and Travis McDonald had 6 points off the bench.

Fremont varsity boys won their second consecutive district championship on Friday night vs Newaygo 50-45. It was an awesome environment to play in. Fans and students from both schools packed the Fremont gym and were treated to a great game. Newaygo got out to a fast start leading 10-3 in the first couple minutes of the game. After that, I thought our defense really picked up and we held them to only 9 points for the rest of the half and led 24-19 at halftime. We played great in the third quarter outscoring Newaygo 16-7 and led 40-26 after three. We did a good job of taking time off the clock in the fourth quarter and forced them to foul us. Unfortunately we went only 8-16 from the line in the quarter and Newaygo hit some unbelievable shots to make the game close down the stretch. Chaz Miller iced the game by making two big free throws with five seconds left. Our defense was excellent for the second game in a row and that was the difference in the game. We are working so hard and communicating well on that end of the floor right now. I am so proud of these boys for how they have come together as a team this week. We've worked through a lot as a team this year, and to have it all finally come together at the right time is great to see. We had very balanced scoring again which is when we are at our best. Gavin Richards had his second double-double of the tournament with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chaz Miller finished with 12 points and 4 steals. Will DeBlake had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Ben Mellema had 8 points and Kyler DeKuiper had 6.

Fremont varsity boys earned a hard fought victory vs Sparta in the second round of districts on Wednesday night 47-44. It seems like every time Sparta and Fremont play it ends up being a great game, and tonight was no exception. I thought both teams played extremely hard the whole game and it was a great back and forth contest. Sparta led by one after the first quarter 14-13. We played a great defensive second quarter and took a three point lead going into halftime 24-21. Sparta came back strong and played a great third quarter to take a 40-33 lead heading into the fourth. We challenged our kids to give everything they had left in the fourth quarter and that's exactly what they did. We outscored Sparta by 10 and held them to only four points in the final period. Sparta is a very good team and always a class act. We have a lot of respect for them and their coaching staff. I am so proud of how our kids battled and fought. We stuck together as a team and got our biggest win of the season. Chaz Miller led the way with 14 points, 8 assists and 3 steals. Kyler DeKuiper played his best game of the season finishing with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal. Chaz and Kyler both played really well on the defensive end of the floor as well. Will DeBlake finished with 8 points, Ben Mellema finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds and Gavin Richards added 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Fremont varsity boys beat Kent City in the first round of the districts 65-43 on Monday night. I thought we did a good job of moving the ball against their zone. We got good shots as a result and made the most of our opportunities. It was a good team win with four players finishing in double figures. Redick Powell had his best game of the year with 13 points off the bench including three 3 pointers. Gavin Richards had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Chaz Miller finished with 12 points, 7 assists and 4 steals. Will DeBlake had 11 points and Travis McDonald had a good game with 7 points and 3 assists off the bench as well.

Fremont varsity boys lost in Orchard View on Thursday 57-64. We did some good things offensively but just did not play well at all on the defensive end. Our effort will have to be much better defensively if we hope to be successful in the tournament. Chaz Miller had a great game with 23 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Gavin Richards added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Fremont varsity boys lost to undefeated and state ranked Whitehall on Tuesday night 43-65. I thought we played hard and battled against a great team. We only trailed by three points at halftime after playing one of our best halves of the year. I thought in the second half we were impatient offensively at times, and forced some bad shots. That led to them getting out into transition which is what the do really well. Overall, we did a lot of good things, and we are playing much better the last couple of weeks. Chaz Miller led the team with 14 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds. Ben Mellema added 13 points and 3 steals.

Fremont varsity boys picked up a big win in Montague on Friday night 49-41. This was a gutsy effort from our boys tonight! We struggled to find any rhythm offensively for the first three quarters. Montague is a very good defensive team, and Atchison makes it almost impossible to score near the basket with his length and athleticism. I thought our defense was very good also. We executed our game plan really well, and because of that we kept the game close. We trailed 40-30 heading into the fourth quarter, and our offense finally started to click. We outscored them 19-2 in the last quarter to secure a very good win. Kyler DeKuiper led the way with 11 points, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds. Will DeBlake had 10 points and 3 steals.
Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Oakridge High School

Fremont varsity boys lost a heart breaker in Oakridge on Tuesday 61-66 in overtime. Oakridge is a very good team and I thought we battled and played them tough. After being down by ten points at halftime, we played a great third quarter and cut the lead to one. The fourth quarter was back and forth with both teams making plays. Gavin Richards hit a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Oakridge ended up shooting a lot of free throws in overtime and unfortunately we came up short. We did a lot of good things that we can build on from this game. We talked about how we wanted to continue to get better as a team the last two weeks of the season, and we did that tonight. Chaz Miller had a great game with 16 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Gavin Richards finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Will DeBlake had 15 points and Ben Mellema added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Fremont varsity boys lost to Ravenna on Friday night 57-48. We were a little short handed with Chaz still being out with an ankle injury, but we did not play well on the defensive end. Too many drives allowed and open looks for them. We will work to improve on that in the last two weeks of the season. Will DeBlake led the team with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Gavin Richards added 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Fremont boys varsity lost a tough game vs Grant on Monday 65-68. We were able to build an eleven point lead in the second half, but late in the third Chaz Miller went down with a bad ankle sprain, and we were not able to hold on without him. He led the team with 17 points, 5 steals and 4 assists. Will DeBlake had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Boys Varsity Basketball vs. North Muskegon High School

Lose: -
Fremont varsity boys lost 53-39 in North Muskegon on Thursday night. North Muskegon is state ranked and undefeated, but we played them very tough. I thought we came out with great energy and were able to build a lead in the first quarter, but we struggled offensively in the second quarter and were down three points at halftime. We fought hard in the second half and kept the game close, but North Muskegon was able to pull away late in the fourth quarter. We can take a lot of positives from this game against a very good team, but we know there are no moral victories, and we need to execute better offensively if we are going to beat quality opponents. Chaz Miller led the team with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Ben Mellema had 11 points and 4 rebounds and Gavin Richards added 6 points and 10 rebounds.

The Fremont varsity boys were able to earn a comeback win vs Mason County Central on Tuesday night 52-44. We fell behind 10-0 to start the game and were down by 14 at halftime. We were able to fight back to take a 1 point lead heading into the fourth quarter and hung on for an eight point win.
I didn't think we started the game with enough energy or any sense of urgency. They played harder than we did in the first half and shot the ball extremely well. To our guys credit, we regrouped at halftime, and came out with a lot more effort in the second half. Gavin Richards really spearheaded that effort for our team coming out of the locker room, and finished the game with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Chaz Miller had 12 points, 7 assists and 7 steals, and John Vissia gave us a big boost off the bench with 9 points in the second half.

Fremont boys varsity was able to get back into the win column with a 53-37 victory in Manistee on Friday night. The boys played with great effort, and we did a lot of positive things as a team. Our defense was very good, holding Manistee to only 13 first half points. I thought we did some good things on offense as well. We got out in transition and did a better job of moving and sharing the ball in the half court. Will DeBlake led Fremont with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Chaz Miller had his best game of the season with 16 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Travis McDonald had 7 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.

Fremont varsity boys lost to undefeated and state ranked Whitehall on Tuesday. Whitehall is a very good team and they played with great energy. They really don't have any weaknesses that you can exploit. They have size, speed, athleticism, ball handlers and shooters. We did not execute or compete at a high enough level to be able to keep the game close. Gavin Richards and Chaz Miller led Fremont with 10 points a piece.

Win: 52.00 - 43.00
Fremont varsity boys won an exciting back and forth contest Friday at home vs Montague for our third win in a row. We trailed 10-9 at after one quarter but came back to take a four point lead at halftime. We extended our lead to double digits in the third, but Montague made a run late in that quarter to cut our lead to 33-32 heading into the fourth. The fourth quarter was very close with each team making big plays. We were down two points with about 20 seconds left in the game when Ben Mellema hit a tough driving shot to tie it and send the game into overtime. We went on a big run early in overtime and were able to make free throws late to put the game away. I was proud of how we fought and never gave up. I thought our effort and our defense was very good, and that was what won the game for us. Chaz Miller led the team with 15 points, 9 assists and 8 steals. Ben Mellema had 14 points and 5 rebounds, and Gavin Richards had another good game with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals.

Win: 68.00 - 42.00
The Fremont varsity boys team won 68-42 in Tri County on Wednesday night. We had good balance on offense and I thought we were solid defensively. We were able to get out in transition and did a good job of attacking when we had those opportunities. We have played much better the last two games and I think we are starting to gain some confidence. Chaz Miller led the team with 16 points. He also added 6 steals and 3 assists. Gavin Richards had a big game with 12 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Will DeBlake finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals and Ben Mellema added 12 points. Fremont lost at home vs Oakridge on Tuesday 65-51. We got off to a good start and led by 3 going into halftime. The Eagles caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half and we were not able to make enough shots to keep up. We fought hard, and it was a much improved effort compared to our last game. Lose: 38.00 - 49.00
Fremont varsity boys lost to Fruitport on Thursday 49-38. It was another game where we struggled to put the ball in the basket. We just have not been able to generate enough offense to win games so far this year. Our defense was pretty good for the most part, but you're not going to win many games when you only score 38 points. We will continue to work hard to try to improve. Chaz Miller led the team with 14 points and Ben Mellema added 10.

The boys varsity team lost in Ludington on Friday night 57-67. We played extremely hard and I was very proud of the effort that we gave. We did a lot of good things, and this is definitely a game we can build on. Ultimately, we just had too many turnovers to win the game, but our defense, rebounding and shooting were much better. Chaz Miller led the team with 18 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds. Will DeBlake had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Mellema added 9 points and 4 assists.

I thought we played extremely hard, and I was very happy with how we played overall, especially for our first game. Our defense was great, and we played with great pace offensively. We took care of the ball and our ball movement and shot selection were really good. Chaz Miller led us with 18 points. Will DeBlake had 16, Ben Mellema had 12 and Gavin Richards finished with 9 points. This was a great team win and a good way to start the season.
