GRANT HIGH SCHOOL: 67
The Packers hosted the Grant Tigers on Tuesday night and fell behind early behind a barrage of Grant three-point baskets. Fremont played a solid first quarter offensively, effectively breaking the Grant press and converting on the offensive end. However, their 11 points were no match for the six 3-pointers that the Tigers made in the first quarter. Grant led 20-11 after one. They extended that lead with a 21-6 advantage in the second quarter to make the halftime score 41-17. The Packers were outscored 12-6 in the third, before outscoring the Tigers 25-14 in the final quarter to set the final score at 67-48.
The Packers were led by Haley Zerlaut's 18 points and 4 assists. Jessica Bennett and Lily VandenBerg each added 8 points. Khaila Noordyk tallied 11 rebounds. Grant ended up with 9 made 3-pointers on the game, 8 in the first half. The Tigers were led by Jaycee Rider and Julie Ashbaugh, each with 20 points. Rider knocked down six three-pointers to go along with two free throws in the game.
Fremont falls to 1-7 overall, 1-3 in the conference. They travel to Tri County on Friday.
Coach Zerlaut -- "Credit to Grant for their sharpshooting in the first half. We did not close out and contest well enough on the perimeter, and they made us pay for it by making the open shots. We competed much better in the second half due to an increased collective effort, but we have to find a way to bring that effort for the entire game in order to be competitive."
