Game Date
Mar 2, 2020
Score
: 46
NEWAYGO HIGH SCHOOL: 51

It was a game of runs throughout for the Packers and Lions in the first round of District play. Fremont jumped out early in the first, but Newaygo answered and the score was tied at 9-9 after one. Newaygo then outscored the Packers 16-14 in the second quarter to make the halftime score 25-23 in the Lions' favor. Sophia Frisbie led Newaygo in that quarter, scoring 8 of her game high 15 points. That included two three pointers in the quarter. In the third quarter, the Packers went on a 17-5 run to take a 10 point lead at 40-30. The fourth quarter, however, was all Newaygo. The Lions held the Packers to just 2 baskets and 2 free throws, while scoring 21 points of their own, including 10-17 from the free throw line. Foul trouble hurt the Packers some in the second half with Calla Miller and Natalie Jamieson spending extended time on the bench, along with Avery Curnett in the fourth quarter.  That foul trouble, along with the Packers having to foul late in the game to stop the clock and try to get the ball back, led to a large discrepancy in free throw attempts in favor of Newaygo. The Lions converted 23-33 on the night, while the Packers were only 8-15.

Paige Vandenberg led the Packers with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Chloe Shriver had 11 points, while Calla Miller had 10 points. Sophia Frisbie led the Lions with 15 points, while Emerson Goodin had 10. The loss ends the Packers season with a 15-6 overall record. The Lions improve to 14-7 and advance to play the Grant Tigers on Wednesday.
